Mississippi worst case scenario

New Orleans District Inundation Map Scenario 2

If the US Army Corps of Engineers did nothing, Baton Rouge and New Orleans were expected to flood. Opening the Morganza spillway releases 10,000 CFS of upstream water flow to a shorter, steeper pathway to the Gulf. Right through thousands of rural bayou homes. It’s a horrible sacrifice: destroy thousands to save hundreds of thousands.

The truly worst case would have the entire Mississippi divert into the Atchafalaya Basin and cut a new permanent course to the Gulf.
