Cuban coffee crisis

Coffee, rum and cigars are Cuba’s trademark products. But now Cubans will be drinking a weaker brew. Fifty years ago, Cuba was one of the world’s largest coffee producers, growing and roasting up to 60,000 tons of the beans. They were a big exporter on the world market. Now they’re down to 18,000 tons.

So now, Cuban authorities are reducing the family coffee ration and diluting their coffee with roasted chick peas. This blend has less caffeine and a bitter taste but it allows Cuba to continue exporting coffee.
