Your tax dollars at work

On April 9, 2010, the Willis Group turned over a $200,000 study commissioned by Florida House Speaker Larry Cretul and paid for with your tax dollars. The study, titled Florida Gulf Coast Oil and Gas Risk Assessment basically concludes:

While a blowout resulting in an oil spill is possible on a production platform, we consider this risk to be extremely small, in particular in a development of as few as 5 to 15 production platforms as may be initially estimated for Gulf Coast State waters.

Two weeks later the Deepwater Horizon lay beneath 5,000 feet of water, 11 men died and oil was gushing into the Gulf of Mexico. Yes, gentlemen, we know the risk is “small.” That’s not the point, the point is, how do you respond efficiently, effectively and swiftly when events of low probability/high cost do occur. Because they will.
