May 2, 2010 oil spill forecast map: Welcome to Florida

Read what BP learned from a 2003 rig accident

Pensacola is in the crosshairs

The Florida Panhandle is home to Naval Air Station at Pensacola, Eglin Air Force Base and Hurlburt Field, near Ft. Walton Beach, and Tyndall Air Force Base, near Panama City. With a large percentage of population in the armed forces, and retirees, the Panhandle is known as a conservative area.

McCain carried the Panhandle in 08, except for the Tallahassee area, now Governor Crist has declared an emergency there. BP has purchased all of the available booms in the country, with estuaries and inlets targeted for earliest placement of the booms, since sandy beaches are easier to clean. Locals are documenting the current condition of beaches while tourist fret about travel plans. They’re stockpiling replacement beach sand now…

Meanwhile the people are discussing proposed “solutions.”

  1. Prayer
  2. A cruise ship barricade
  3. Load barges with concrete and pour it on the wellhead
  4. Two booms instead of one
