When I was a kid, there was a local mom-and-pop pizza shop up the road. We spent way too much time there, drinking soda and feeding quarters into the pinball machines after school.
The rise of Bain Capital-owned Domino’s Pizza put that pizza shop and many more just like it out of business. So as Domino’s grew to dominate, the local neighborhood pizza shop died.
Likewise, there used to be a family-owned office supply store in every industrial park. Today they’re gone, replaced by Bain-owned Staples.
Mitt Romney’s claim about creating jobs is wrong. Domino’s is a more efficient supplier of pizzas. Staples is a more efficient supplier of office supplies. More efficient means they need fewer people to deliver the pizza or the copy paper. More efficient actually means fewer jobs. Mitt Romney did not “create” jobs, he just moved some around. Ask anyone who used to run an office supply or pizza shop.
